REDONDO BEACH -- A former Redondo Beach reserve police officer has been charged with drugging and raping a friend before shaving off his body hair.
John Haig Marshall, 55, was arrested on New Year's Day on a felony charge of penetration with a foreign object while using a drug, according to police.
He is free on $100,000 bail.
He was originally arrested in October 2009 after a 29-year-old acquaintance claimed he was sexually assaulted when he went to Marshall's home to fix his computer, Redondo Beach police Sgt. Phil Keenan said.
The man told police he was given an alcoholic beverage that evening and before he knew it, he was incapacitated but still aware of what was going on, Keenan said.
Marshall allegedly proceeded to shave the man's body hair and sexually assault him in the shower, Keenan said.
Investigators say the men were drinking buddies.
Marshall's lawyer Jeffrey Gray says the shower was consensual and there was no sexual penetration.
Police believe Marshall may have assaulted others in the past.
Marshall, who resigned in 1981 after serving nine months as a reserve officer, was the subject of at least two complaints over the last 10 years, alleging he had drugged and sexually abused other men and boys in his home over a 30-year period.
But this is the first time he has been charged.
According to Keenan, Marshall was previously investigated in sexual assault and drug dealing cases involving teenage boys.
Anonymous tipsters have accused Marshall of providing teens with Quaaludes, cocaine, methamphetamine, marijuana, and alcohol, Keenan said.
Police suspect he has molested men and boys in the past, possibly over a period of 30 years, officials said.
Gray has called the case "pure innuendo."
Marshall is set to be arraigned on Jan. 26.
