Death of 1,000 Birds and 100,000 Fish Remains a Mystery

OH NO! NOT THE RED DRUM FUSH AND BLACKBIRDS

(NewsCore) - Arkansas authorities were Sunday investigating two mysterious events in the state after more than 1,000 blackbirds fell out of the sky on New Year’s Eve and 100,000 fish turned up dead in a river, THV-TV reported.
At about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 31, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission officers began receiving reports of blackbirds falling from the sky over a one-mile area in Beebe.
“I came out here and saw a bird drop,” said resident Stephen Bryant.
"It was horrible; you could not even get down the road without running over hundreds,” another resident, Melissa Weatherly, said.
The U.S. Environmental Services was hired to pick up the birds, the last of which was removed early Sunday. Some birds that were alive were taken away for testing.
Resident were not evacuated as a test of air quality returned clear of toxins.
Officials said they were looking at various possibilities as to why the birds fell en masse -- including being startled by fireworks, lightning, stress or hit by high-altitude hail.
Meanwhile, about 125 miles from Beebe, Arkansas Game and Fish authorities were also puzzling over the deaths of 100,000 drum fish along a 20-mile stretch between the Ozark dam and Highway 109 bridge in Franklin County.
The department was alerted to the deaths last week and have since collected samples from the affected area.
"Right now it's fine to fish. If you go out there you can still fish for bass and crappie, catfish, it will be fine. Obviously don't eat the dead fish,” Keith Stephens from Game and Fish said.
